Being an adventurous hiker, I end up in some amazing places. Camping and trekking and climbing in remote corners of the world makes me happy beyond anything else. I've always had a fascination with places along the Silk Road, that ancient trading route between East and West. Exploring thriving communities making goods in the old ways, the knowledge passed down the generations...it's such a crazy concept in our fast-paced world! Being a maker myself, I will make a beeline for whatever workshop or shop we encounter and start fawning over what is being made locally, be it carvings or textiles. I can rarely bring things back with me while trekking as it is quite a heavy load to carry, but I dreamed of finding a way to bring gorgeous handcrafts back with me to gift and share. And now I have!
I have travelled to Ladakh in the India Himalayas to find these handwoven goods. People of the Chang-pas tribe raise Cashmere goats in the harsh, high desert of the Changthang (Tibetan Plateau). The Cashmere is combed from the goats, spun and woven by skilled locals. Buying directly from them ensures they are paid fairly for their work and they can continue passing their craft down the generations, and cutting out the middleman means I can provide fair prices to you. They also have very small production amounts as the desert does not support so many animals on it, and by keeping the herd numbers low they are able to harvest sustainably.
What sets these scarves apart is their ethical journey from pasture to product. The cashmere sourced for these scarves is obtained through ethical means, prioritizing the well-being of the goats and the livelihoods of the herders. This commitment to ethical sourcing means you can revel in the warmth and comfort of your scarf or blanket knowing that it was produced with utmost care and consideration for both the environment and the communities involved in its creation.
